Amazing avenue of beech trees
Mysterious when surrounded by fog, magical on a cloudless day, terrifying when the night arrives. There is only one such place – The Dark Hedges.
The Dark Hedges is a unique section of the Bregagh Road near the village of Armoy in Northern Ireland. It’s all because of the beech trees planted by the Stuart family in the 18th century on both sides of the road. The trees were planted in front of their Georgian villa, Gracehill House, where the golf course is now located, and to impress visitors. Over the course of three centuries, the trees climbed up and finally one side intertwined with the other to form a natural arched tunnel. This view has become one of the most photographed in Northern Ireland, although the events of last year may have changed this, as a fence was erected along the length of the trees. The local people call this a profanation.
